Distributed Solar Energy Potential Mapping for Tamil Nadu

Image
Distributed solar energy  presents a significant opportunity to bridge the gap between rising electricity demand and  Tamil Nadu’s clean energy transition goals . Tamil Nadu’s total solar  distributed energy resources  (DER) potential is estimated at 129,166 MW, which includes multiple solar photovoltaics (PV) applications such as  rooftop solar  (RTS),  urban PV ,  building integrated PV ,  floating PV ,  canal top solar PV ,  rail PV and road integrated PV systems . Of this, RTS alone accounts for 60,479 MW. However, as of April 2025, only 0.78% of the total DER potential and 1.66% of the RTS potential had been realised, highlighting a major implementation gap. The  Tamil Nadu Solar Energy Policy 2019  set a target of 9,000 MW of installed solar capacity by 2023, with 3,600 MW designated for the consumer category, including RTS and other distributed systems. As of April 2025, RTS deployment stands at  1,003.3...

Tangedco’s Carbon Emissions And Energy Mix: Trends And Insights (FY18-FY24)

Image
Tamil Nadu Generation and Distribution Corporation’s  (TANGEDCO; now known as  Tamil Nadu Power Distribution Corporation Limited  (TNPDCL)) CO₂ emissions analysis, conducted through a distribution licensee-specific tracking methodology, reveals the urgent need for accelerated decarbonisation of Tamil Nadu’s electricity grid. By linking annual procurement data with the  Central Electricity Authority’s (CEA) CO₂ Baseline Database , the report offers a disaggregated view of TANGEDCO’s emissions over a seven-year period, from FY 2017–18 to FY 2023–24. This analysis, published by  Auroville Consulting , establishes a replicable model for transparent and accurate emissions disclosure and reporting and supports improved regulatory oversight, energy planning, and compliance tracking. The report provides a detailed examination of TANGEDCO’s power procurement composition, renewable energy contribution, emission intensity trends, and year-on-year emission shifts. It equips...

Electricity Department – Government Of Puducherry Carbon Emissions And Energy Mix: Trends And Insights (FY18-FY24)

Image
Puducherry   is increasingly prioritising transparent  CO₂ emissions   reporting as a crucial element of its decarbonisation strategy. Recognising the imperative to address climate change and align with national goals, the Union Territory has undertaken initiatives to assess and track its  greenhouse gas emissions . This includes the development of  greenhouse gas inventories , providing a baseline for understanding the sources and levels of emissions across various sectors such as energy, transport, and waste. The establishment of  the Puducherry Climate Change Cell   underscores the institutional commitment to this effort, aiming to build a scientific understanding of emissions and inform targeted reduction strategies. Transparent reporting is seen as essential for effective decision-making, enabling the identification of key areas for intervention and the monitoring of progress towards carbon neutrality targets. The drive for transparent emis...
